# 12. State-Based Conditions, Illegal Actions, and Loops

## 12.1 State-Based Conditions

12.1.1 Perform State-Based Conditions after every turn-based action, Snatch Attempt, and Ability resolves, and before the next queued Ability resolves.

12.1.2 Confirm that each card is in exactly one zone.

12.1.3 Confirm that each Arena Space contains at most one card.

12.1.4 Confirm that every Arena card is face-up, oriented toward its Owner, and has exactly one Marking Token showing its Controller.

12.1.5 Remove Marking Tokens from cards not on the Arena and return them to the shared supply.

12.1.6 End expired effects, recalculate continuous effects, and update all public current characteristics.

12.1.7 State-Based Conditions do not permit a player to reverse a completed legal choice or action. If an incomplete physical manipulation creates a prohibited representation, correct only the physical representation needed to complete the already-announced legal action. Tournament policy governs any [backup](https://momon-wonder.gitbook.io/comprehensive-rules-1.0.0/abilities-and-game-state/spaces/MsoP3dhZ3cqYJBtX8NIL/pages/DzxQWWoJNt4df6ypdVWp#9.2-backup-gate) after a completed action and determines any infraction or penalty.

12.1.8 Repeat State-Based Conditions until no correction or expiration changes the game state. Then place waiting triggers into the Queue.

12.1.9 State-Based Conditions perform only deterministic corrections expressly required by Sections 12.1.2-12.1.6, including expiration, recalculation, and Marking Token cleanup. If an irregularity would require choosing which Object to keep, move, or remove and the rules do not uniquely determine that choice, stop processing that irregularity and call a Judge; neither State-Based Conditions nor a Judge may invent a correction through this section. Sanctioned play uses the [PROCEDURE AND PENALTY GUIDE](https://momon-wonder.gitbook.io/procedure-and-penalty-guide-1.0.0/investigation-review-discipline/section-9). Outside sanctioned play, use a rollback only when every action can be reversed exactly and no newly revealed private information prevents restoration; if a complete rollback is impossible, end the Game as a Game Draw.

## 12.2 Move and Swap

12.2.1 Move changes a Momon’s Arena Space without changing zones. Move is not a default player action and occurs only when an Ability instructs it.

12.2.2 A Move to an occupied or nonexistent Space is impossible and does nothing unless the effect explicitly handles the occupied Space.

12.2.3 Swap exchanges the Arena Spaces of two legal Momon simultaneously. If either object is no longer legal when the Swap resolves, neither object moves.

12.2.4 Move and Swap do not create a Snatch Check unless an effect explicitly instructs one.

## 12.3 Impossible Actions

12.3.1 A player cannot choose an illegal target, illegal Space, illegal card, or prohibited option.

12.3.2 If an effect offers several choices and at least one changes the game state legally, the player cannot choose an option that is impossible solely to avoid changing the game state.

12.3.3 If all choices are impossible, the instruction does nothing.

## 12.4 Loops

12.4.1 A loop is a repeated sequence of game events or instructions. The same game state recurs only when the Rules-Relevant State is the same, including the Arena, each Object's Controller and current characteristics, the Queue, applicable continuous effects and their durations, the current Turn and Step, and the Legal Choices available to each player. Hidden information is considered only when it changes a currently available Legal Choice or a rule determination.

12.4.2 If a loop contains an optional choice controlled by one player, that player must state a finite number of iterations and the different Legal Choice they will make when that number is reached. The player may not announce a different choice that is illegal or that is prohibited solely to avoid changing the Game State.

12.4.3 If more than one player controls a Legal Choice capable of ending or changing the loop, each such player, in Active Player then Non-Active Player order, must state a finite number of iterations and a different Legal Choice. Perform the smallest stated number of iterations. The player associated with that number must then make the stated different choice. Resolve equal stated numbers in Active Player then Non-Active Player order. No player may continue the repeated sequence beyond that player's stated limit.

12.4.4 If no player has a different Legal Choice that ends or changes the loop, the loop is mandatory. Before ending the game, verify that the same Rules-Relevant State has recurred and that no Legal Choice can terminate or change the loop. If either condition cannot be verified, do not apply this rule; call a Judge in sanctioned play and continue under the applicable rules and procedures.

12.4.5 After the verification in Section 12.4.4, the game ends in a Game Draw. Comprehensive Rules determine the Game Result. In sanctioned play, the applicable Tournament Rules Guide determines how that Game Draw is recorded or converted within the Match, including any format-specific no-draw requirement. Outside sanctioned play, the result remains a Game Draw.

| **Example.** A player declares three iterations of an Optional Loop and identifies the different Legal Choice they will make after the third iteration. The player may not continue beyond the declared limit and must make the announced different choice when that limit is reached. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://momon-wonder.gitbook.io/comprehensive-rules-1.0.0/abilities-and-game-state/12-state-based-conditions-illegal-actions-and-loops.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
